Foundation Stage

Within the happy and caring atmosphere of the Foundation Stage, the Kindergarten and Transition children gain an understanding of social skills and the basic concepts of the key subject areas.

The day is full and varied with ample time for imaginative and creative activities and play; the classrooms are spacious and bright with the children having direct access to their own safe and attractive outdoor play area and the Foundation Stage teachers are assisted by full time helpers.

Kindergarten pupils generally start in the September following their third birthday, building up to full time from an initial minimum of five half day sessions. The natural progression to Transition takes place in the September before their fifth birthday.

Key Stage 1

Throughout Key Stage 1 the children learn the skills necessary for academic success. A traditional grounding in English and Mathematics is combined with project work in other subjects and the chance to develop a love of music, art and P.E. Computer keyboard skills are learnt at this stage. At Brooklands much of the learning process is ‘hands-on’, with children discovering for themselves the joy of knowledge.

Optional extras at this age include ballet and modern dance, short tennis and languages. Children in Forms 1 and 2 have the opportunity to link with the Foundation Stage or Key Stage Two pupils for selected school activities as appropriate.

Key Stage 2

The children receive a full and balanced curriculum, which takes advantage of the expertise of our subject specialist teachers. Pupils learn the skills of working independently and collaboratively and are encouraged to stretch the boundaries of their knowledge.

Experimental and investigative programmes of study, making use of our excellent facilities and location, allow the children to combine the most meaningful elements of practical and theoretical work. In recent years, the completion of an ambitious Science & Technology Building, which includes the Art Centre and outdoor theatre, a fully equipped ICT suite and an upgraded Music Centre have demonstrated our commitment to provide the most up to date resources.

The growth of self-confidence is vital at this age and children are encouraged to take on extra responsibilities within the school, such as being leaders of their Houses. A much-used library is testimony to the enjoyment that can come from a love of books, and teaches children how to research project material.

When our boys and girls leave Brooklands at the age of 11 our aim is that they leave us confident, well-mannered and self-assured, ready to take on the challenges of senior education and life ahead.
