Social events

Brooklands has an ad hoc ‘Social Committee’ (BSC) which involves anyone who is associated with the School and Little Brooklands – parents, staff, former pupils and parents and ‘friends of the School’.

We aim to organise family events where both children and adults can meet to have some fun. We also endeavour to raise funds to provide extra equipment and resources for the children to use in school.

As we are all members you can be as involved as you like: there is no pressure to do anything. It is up to members to decide on the events they wish to see happening. Once a suggestion is brought forward to the Headmaster, a group of parents will form a ‘steering group’ and you can then help out as you wish.

Meetings

We don’t have formal meetings as a more formal PTA might have with elected officers, agendas, minutes and accounts. Only once a steering group is set up will we meet as and when needed as much communication can be done by email / telephone. At meetings, we only ever ask for volunteers: we never volunteer anyone who isn’t at the meeting, no-one is ever forced to do anything and you are not made to feel guilty if you don’t want to help. At most functions that do need people to help out, we always try to get enough people so that no-one is tied down for the whole event. In this way, we feel that those who want/can help will do so because they want to rather than feeling they have to. Then everyone can do their bit and enjoy themselves as well!

Items provided

Major projects have included items such as providing for the new School minibus, the installation of an outdoor play area and putting up higher netting for the Sports field. In previous years we have also raised funds for items such as:

  • CD player
  • Christmas lights
  • digital cameras
  • sports scoreboard
  • outdoor toys
  • School House badges
  • water dispenser
  • school clock

Current Project

We are continuing to raise money for the School Outdoor Classroom. Phase 1, which was to tarmac an area behind the main car park, was completed last year.

We are currently raising funds for Phase 2, which is to provide a wood and canvas structure to cover the tarmac. Once this has been completed, we will move onto Phase 3 which is to add trellising and covering towards the Millennium Garden. When all of the building work has been done, we want to provide outdoor equipment so that this area can be fully utilized by all.

Recent fund raising activities

We are always looking for new ways to raise funds and are open to all suggestions. Recent fund-raising activities have included:

  • Bags 2 School
  • Yellow Moon
  • Christmas Markets
  • School BBQ
  • Dinner Dance
